Reasons to Use a Cloth Diaper Service

What is your motivation, or reasons to use cloth a diaper service?

This is usually the first question we ask when we meet with a family for the first time about using cloth diaper service. And we meet a lot of families. Usually around 75 every year that are wanting to learn more about cloth diapers, cloth diaper service, and about Tidy Tushees. Everyone has a reason. Some are the common ones like “better for the environment” or “better for babies health”. Some are less common, like “the patterns are really cute”, or “my Mom said I had to”. We always agree with Mom on that one.

At Tidy Tushees, we like to focus on the 4 main reasons to cloth diaper. In no particular order:

1. Better for the environment
2. Better for baby’s health

4. Potty train faster

1.) Better for the environment: If we are the first to tell you, I am really sorry, but babies go through about 8,000 diaper changes before potty training. If you are using disposable diapers, everyone one of them goes into the landfill. Even if the disposable diapers say they are compostable, if you throw them in the garbage they will decompose very, very slowly in the landfill. Unless you are composting them yourself, there is no commercial composite in the Okanagan that will take dirty diapers. Disposable diapers will take 100’s of years to decompose in the landfill. Since disposable diapers were created in the 1950’s, that means every disposable diaper ever went into the landfill, is still in the landfill. 8,000 x how many babies in diapers over the last 60 years? = a lot of garbage.

2.) Better for Baby’s Health: With properly washed cloth diapers from a cloth diaper service there are no harsh chemicals going against baby’s sensitive skin. Have a look at a box of disposable diapers and see how many chemicals are in them. How many of those chemicals can you pronounce? All of those chemicals are sitting against baby’s skin 24 hours a day for the first 2-3 years of their life. It is so much better for baby’s health to trade all of those chemicals in for clean cotton cloth diapers.

3.) Save money: We always tell people that the only way cloth diapers are going to cost you money, is if you buy them to washthem yourself, and they end up sitting in your closet because you don’t use them. DON’T be that person. Disposable diapers are EXPENSIVE and will cost between $1,250 to $2,000 per year depending on the brands you buy. Purchasing and washing your own cloth diapers is the least expensive option, but that is not always feasible for some families. There is the upfront cost of purchasing the diapers, and then the time commitment to washing them. With cloth diaper service, you still save money over disposables, you still get all of the benefits of cloth diapers, but you don’t have to do any of the dirty work.

4.) Potty train faster: This is probably the least well known reason to cloth diaper, but it shouldn’t be. Raise your hand if you want your baby our diapers faster. I thought so. Babies potty train 3-6 months faster in cloth diapers compared to disposables. This is because they are able to feel when they soil their diaper. When they feel it, they can let you know, and they can also learn to understand that they don’t like that feeling. Every baby will potty train at their own speed, but it is rare that we have babies using the cloth diaper service for more than 2 years. With cloth diapers babies graduate out of diapers much faster.
